Off shoulder shirt

Let's draft the pattern for this asymmetric off shoulder shirt.

It includes many interesting details: a very open neckline with spaghetti straps, pleated sleeves, gathered high-low peplum, draped bodice.

You can sew it in any lightweight fabric but we recommend cotton popeline for a little structure.

To draft the pattern, start from a basic block with darts.

Step 1

Trace the full front and draw the waistband first: it’s a parallel line 4cm above waistline.

Then pick a point approx halfway in the armhole and move 3 to 4cm inwards; from this point draw the neckline to the opposite waist dart.

Draw the high-low hemline.

Step 2

Cut through all lines to separate the pieces:

  • bodice, cut through the front neckline too and reshape the neckline with shoulder dart closed
  • waistband, make waist darts even in width all the way through and close them
  • peplum, draw a slash line passing through right dart apex, then extend the line and extend left dart to meet it. Draw the short peplum on it.
Step 3

Here are the front pieces:

  • bodice (left and right are the same), draw the slanted slash line from bust point to underbust line close to center front
  • waistband, left and right
  • peplum, left and right.
Step 13

Your new pattern is ready! It includes:

  • back bodice
  • back waistband
  • back peplum
  • sleeve
  • front bodice
  • front right waistband
  • front right peplum
  • front left waistband
  • front left peplum
  • add a rectangular piece for spaghetti straps and a bias piece to finish the neckline.
