Open back pleated dress

4.5/5

Let's draft together the pattern of this dress.

It features a pleated skirt, an open back and a front bodice with dart manipulation - it is perfect to practice some pattern making techniques!

This is a scuba fabric, but you can use a variety of fabrics that will give you different effects - more flowy or more structured skirt, it's up to you! If needed, add an interlining to the bodice and waistband pieces.

Start from a fitted basic block with darts.

Step 1

Flare both back and front and draw the lines for paneled skirt.

Draw two lines parallel to the waist, one above and one underneath, at the same distance – mind that back ones are slightly slanted in this style.

On front draw the new neckline, the princess cut and the line for dart manipulation.

Step 2

Cut away all the excess.

Step 3

Trace the pieces separately: in between the two pieces for back skirt add a pleat, as well as one in between the front ones.

On center front, close the shoulder and waist dart and open the new one.

Join the waistband pieces by closing the darts.

Trace the front panel separate.

Step 4

Redraw the pieces with the added volume of the pleats and mark them.

Redraw the waistband with a continuous line.

You will also need a spaghetti strap that crosses on back.
