Open back tiered dress

4.5/5

Let's draft the pattern for this open back, halter neck tiered dress.

The striped fabric gives a cool effect, but you can use the same pattern for any solid color or print! Just pick a lightweight, flowy cotton, linen blend or viscose.

It's a quick project that makes a perfect summer dress or swimsuit cover.

Step 1

Start from a basic block with darts.

Extend the length to the ankles, then flare the sides by 5 to 7cm and square down from dart apexes to hemline.

Draw the new neckline with open back, then draw an additional dart 1cm wide at front neckline. This will make the halter neck tighter to the chest.

Step 2

Cut on the new necklines, then cut through the slash lines.

You need to close darts and manipulate their volume into a volume/flare at hemline.

Make sure you draw the tier line (we suggest 5 to 10cm above knee line).

Step 3

Open back pivoting on neckline point – open at hemline the same measurement that you open on front – see next step.
