Oversized coat with wide collar

4.5/5

We're preparing our winter wardrobe by adding a trendy coat: it has an oversized fit, drop shoulder and a statement collar. Bonus points if you sew it in a bold fabric as this one!

To draft the pattern, start from a basic block without darts and loose fit. If you have a matching sleeve, you can use it as a starting point but it will be changed quite a lot to get the drop shoulder cut.

We suggest working with a boiled wool or a woven wool/cachemire/alpaca or blend of these a bit thick and chuncky.

Step 1

First, adjust front and back length to mid calf.

Then raise the shoulder point by 1,5cm and redraw shoulder line.

Step 2

Extend by 8cm the shoulder line from outer shoulder point (the one you just raised), then draw the drop shoulder line by lowering 2cm on back and 4cm on front.

Drop armhole point by 8-10cm and move it outwards along with the whole side seam by 5-6cm on both front and back.
