Pencil dress with pleated bodice

4.5/5

Let's draft the pattern for this pleated dress.

The bodice section features an interesting dart manipulation into pleats. To draft the pattern, start from a basic block with darts and 8 to 10cm ease at bust circumference, 4 to 6cm at waist, 2 to 4cm at hip circumference.

You can sew the dress in any light to medium weight fabric. We suggest to add a full lining cut from the original block (without the pleats).

Step 1

Trace a copy of the basic block.

Flare the skirt slightly (add 3 to 5cm on each side), then erase back dart by discarding half of it from center back and half from side seam.

Cut through front waistline to separate bodice and skirt.

Step 2

On front skirt, discard the dart from side seam.
