Pleated dress with open back

4.5/5

Let's draft together the pattern for this amazing summer dress.

It features a pleated maxi skirt and a short bodice with open back.

The perfect fabric is something lightweight and breezy, as a shirting fabric, lightweight cotton or cotton/viscose blend.

Step 1

To draft the pattern, start from a copy of your contoured bodice block.

If you want to learn the construction with our method, it’s the lesson #2 in our basic blocks course, available here.

Draw the underbust line on front and widen waist dart to 3cm at it.

Step 2

Use the underbust line as slash line from center front to dart, then draw the slanted dart up to center back at waist line.

The bottom part is the skirt starting point.

Step 3

On bodice, follow the underbust line to shape the dress upper section.

Draw also the new neckline on back and front.
