Pleated skirt with topstitching

Style analysis: high-waisted, pleated skirt featuring vertical seams that highlight the pleats, giving it a geometric, structured look. The waistband is wide and structured, contributing to the overall tailored appearance of the garment.

Fabric: medium weight woven fabric as twill or denim, thicker than usual thread to make topstitching more visible. We suggest polyester 120 all purpose thread for inner seams and cotton 50 or cotton 30 for topstitching (the same thread used for topstitching jeans).

Step 1

Draft a basic skirt with 4cm wearing ease on waist and hip circ.
If you’re new to our method, you can try our free pre-course to create a basic skirt pattern on your own measurements, then you can follow this tutorial to turn the basic pattern into this style!

Change front and back so that they have matching width and work on the pattern of front only, as front and back are identical.

Adjust length, then flare 2 to 3cm at hemline blending to zero to hips.

Step 2

Work on only half front: divide waist line by 5 and divide hemline by 5. This way you get 4 points on waistline and 4 points on hemline. Connect them to find the slash lines for pleats.

Step 3

Now divide the dart width by 4 (e.g. our dart is 3cm wide, so 3cm/4=0,73cm).

Erase the original dart and draw small darts using the previously found slash lines as dart centers. Dart length is even to original one.
