Shift dress with asymmetric cape

4.5/5

An interesting dress that is perfect for wedding season - it can be sewn in light to medium weight fabric, we would love it in silk crepe or satin. Keep it minimal with a solid color or spice things up with a bold print!

You can also play with the length to create a stunning blouse.

To draft the pattern start from a basic block with darts and 6 to 10cm ease at bust - here, module 1 of our basic blocks course is about creating, fitting and manipulating these blocks.

Step 1

First, measure down from armpit along side seam 6 to 8cm and connect this point to bust point to create the slash line for french dart.

Adjust dress length to ankles, then mirror front to have it full.

Cut through slash lines and close shoulder darts opening a matching volume in french darts.

Step 2

Now move dart apex 2 to 3cm sideways (to avoid pointy breasts) and redraw darts.

Step 3

Mirror back too, then lengthen left shoulder line by your sleeve length +40cm and start drawing the cape hemline. Cape ends on right shoulder line 2 to 4cm before shoulder point.

Repeat the same process with matching measurements on front
