Shirt dress with front gathers

4.5/5

Let's draft together the pattern for this trendy yet classic shirt dress.

It features a separate button stand and front gathers.

To draft the pattern, start from a basic block with darts and appropriate wearing ease. We suggest 10 to 14cm at bust. If you want to learn how to make and fit your own basic block, we have a course on it (and on much more) starting on May 30th. All details are available here.

Step 1

Trace a copy of back and front.

On back, lower 8 to 12cm from neckline and square across to draw the yoke line.

On front, draw the yoke line parallel to shoulder line, 3 to 5cm below it.

Draw a line 1,5cm inwards from center front for button stand.

Step 2

Cut through all lines to separate the pieces.

You’ll merge back and front yokes at shoulder line.

Extend front button stand so it is 6cm wide (will be folded in half, so the final measurement will be 3cm).

Step 3

Redraw the yoke as one piece and mark with notches shoulder points.

On front main piece, draw some slash lines for manipulating darts into gathers:

  • one line from bust point
  • one line at waist line
  • a couple of lines above the waist and a couple below it.

Cut through all lines from center front to side seam, other than the first one that stops at bust point.
