Short top with gathered cups

4.5/5

Let's draft the pattern for this short top. It features an interesting gathered detail in the cup section.

You can sew it in jersey for a t-shirt version like this one, or in a woven fabric if you like something more stuctured. In this second case remember to add a center back opening ;)

Start from a fitted basic block with darts - choose wearing ease according to the fabric you are using and the fit you like most.

Step 1

Trace a copy of back and front bodices. Draw the new hem line at underbust on both pieces.

On back, erase the dart and discard it from center back. Reshape it to have a 90°angle between center back and waist line and center back and neckline.

On front, widen the dart from waist to underbust making it 3cm wide all the way in this section, then shape it to bust point. Draw the upper part of the cup and widen shoulder dart by 1cm at this point, then blend to shoulder line. Draw the bottom cup line from dart to center front, curved.

Step 2

Cut through all lines. Toy get:

  • 1 back piece
  • 2 upper front pieces, that you will join by closing the shoulder dart
  • 2 bottom front pieces, that create the cup section. This part will be in 2 layers: the inner one shapes the cup, the outer one is gathered.
