Slip dress with pleated bodice

4.5/5

Let's draft the pattern for this simple yet sofisticated slip dress.

It features a low back neckline, spaghetti straps and a flared skirt with side slit.

You can sew it in silk satin with french seams in the skirt (technique is shown here) and an inner bodice with darts so you have more support in bust area and you can insert pads between the two layers of fabric.

Step 1

To draft the pattern, start from a copy of your contoured dress (basic dress with darts and zero wearing ease).

Extend the skirt to full length, then flare by 3 to 5cm from sides.

Cut through waistline to separate bodice and skirt.

Step 2

On bodice, draw the new neckline – make sure you match the measurement at side seam.

On skirt, square down from dart apex and cut through the slash lines to manipulate darts.

Step 3

Here you see bodices ending at neckline and skirts with darts manipulated into volume at the hem.

Match the volume you give in front and back and if still some part is remaining in back, remove it from center.

Step 9

Cut through the lines and space pieces by twice the pleat depth (we suggest to space 3 to 4cm for pleats 1,5 or 2cm deep).
