Structured tiered mini skirt

Style analysis: structured mini skirt with a minimalistic and tailored design. The construction is not so easy: there's an inner skirt whose back is plain and front has inner layer plain with insertion lines for the outer layer tiers, then there's a top skirt with additional volume at hips (shaped with a cool dart manipulation to skip side seam). In between inner and top skirt there's room for a belt, that covers almost entirely the front waistband.
The layers are slightly overlapping, resembling pleated or tiered panels, and are sculptural in appearance.

Fabric: the standout feature is the glossy deep burgundy hue. The skirt appears to be made of a patent leather or similarly reflective material, creating a bold, futuristic aesthetic.

Step 1

Start by tracing a copy of your basic skirt with 2cm wearing ease on waist circ and 2 to 4cm ease on hip circ, then:

  • adjust length to 20 to 25cm below hipline for the shorter skirt
  • lengthen by 5 to 7cm for the longer skirt
  • draw outer skirt volume by moving 4 to 5cm outwards from side seams, blending to zero at waist
  • lastly draw the front slanted line from waistline 6 to 8cm from side waist to hemline2cm past inner skirt side seam.
Step 2

Trace separate copies:

  • back inner skirt, shorter, to original side seam
  • front inner skirt, shorter, to original side seam
  • back outer skirt, longer and wider
  • front outer skirt, longer, up to the slanted line.

Make sure to have grainline and hip notches on all pieces.

Step 3

Merge back and front outer skirts at side seam.

Notice that a wide dart is created at top. Measure its width.
