Tiered maxi dress

4.5/5

Maxi dresses are a summer staple, and they get extra points if airy and tiered.

You can sew this one in any lightweight fabric - we love natural fibers that are comfortable also when it's super hot as cotton and viscose.

Draft the pattern starting from a basic block with darts - if you want to try our method for made to measure patterns, here you can find our 12-lessons course.

Step 1

Start from a dress block with zero to very small wearing ease (2 to 4cm at each circumference, according to the fit you prefer) and trace front and back separate.

Lengthen to ankles, then on front draw underbust line and a parallel line 6 to 8cm below it: these two lines identify the width of underbust band. We suggest underbust band to sit few cm (2 to 3cm) above waistline.

Draw a line matching to bottom one also on back.

Step 2

On back bodice, erase dart and discard it half from center and half from side seam, then draw the V neckline moving 3 to 4cm from high shoulder point along shoulder line.

On front bodice, draw the V neckline moving a matching measurement from high shoulder point along shoulder line and ending in center front at underbust line. Widen shoulder dart by 1cm at neckline to keep it tighter to chest.

Cut through the lines to separate back bodice and skirt, front bodice, front waistband and skirt.

Step 3

On both bodices, move in 2 to 4cm from shoulder point along shoulder line and redraw armhole dropping it by 3 to5cm from armpit.

On front waistband, tape dart closed.

On front bodice, cut through underbust dart, close shoulder one and move its volume to underbust.
