Trousers with side panel

4.5/5

Let's draft the pattern for this trouser with side detail.

It's an interesting manipulation that gives a twist to a super classic pant pattern.

You can sew it in any suit fabric, lightweight wool or medium weight cotton or silk.

You can find here our sewing tutorial for pants with fly, zipper and facing.

Step 1

To draft the pattern, start from a basic block with wearing ease at waist and hips (the trouser shouldn’t fit too tight).

Draw the slash line where back fold line is (halfway in back leg from hem to knee, then curving outwards toward the dart).

Cut through this line and discard the dart in the cut.

Step 2

Trace a copy of front so that you have left and right front for the asymmetric style.

Step 3

Join in a temporary way the two front halves from hip point to waist in center, then place also side back piece matching it at hip level.

Draw the panel shaping it as in the image, then trace it on a separate sheet. Make sure to trace also front darts and side dart.

Separate trouser pieces.

Step 5

On left front, draw the side pocket and a waistband 4cm wide.
