V neck, open back lace dress

4.5/5

Let's draft the pattern for this super sexy summer dress.

It has an interesting bodice with deep V neckline and open back and sides, a full skirt and statement sleeves.

The fabric in the photo is most likely stretch lace, but we made the pattern reconstruction for a non stretch (or slightly stretchy, as 2%) woven.

To draft the pattern, start from a basic block with darts (contoured bodice) and zero to very small wearing ease.

Step 1

Trace a copy of front and back bodices.

Draw the new neckline:

  • wider and a bit lower on back
  • wider on front (matching measurement to back) and ending in center front on waistline.

Then draw the slanted line from upper back to front waistline – make sure to match measurements at side seam.

Step 2

Cut through the lines to separate front and back bodices, then dra the slash line for french dart on front.

Cut through this line and close shoulder and waist darts on front, opening a matching volume into the slash line.

Step 3

Redraw french dart with apex 2 to 3cm shorter and slightly curved shape, better to fit the bust.

Mark grainline on both pieces perpendicular to the original waistline.
