Wrap mini dress

4.5/5

Let's draft the pattern of this mini dress.

It features a front wrap with drawstring, short sleeves and skirt flounce.

You could use a lightweight fabric as voile, chiffon or georgette as outer layer paired with crepe or envers satin as inner layer.

Start from a basic block with darts with wearing ease (we suggest at least 10cm at bust, 8 at waist, 6 at hip) and matching basic sleeve.

Step 1

First, draw the wrap front neckline from one high point shoulder to the opposite waist dart.

Then, draw the new sleeve hem 5-7cm below the armpit.

Step 2

Cut on the new lines. You get:

  • back bodice with waist dart,
  • front bodice with shoulder and waist darts,
  • short sleeve.

Cut through the front waist dart to open it more and manipulate the volume of shoulder dart.

Step 3

Trace a copy of front bodice with the new dart volume.

Then, draw an additional dart at the neckline 1cm deep and pointing to bust point. This dart will be manipulated and its volume will be opened into waist dart, but the construction helps having the neckline tighter to the bust.

Step 4

Trace a copy of the front bodice will all darts transferred to the waist one.

Keep the center front line, which is also the grainline.
